Meet Ringo Star!

In spite of our housework, long walk to get ice cream, and DIY projects (more on all of those later in the week) the fiancé and I found time to go and get our first pet together – Ringo Star!

(he looks a bit evil here, but this is the only photo I have been able to get of him so far. He is such a cutie pie!)

He is a rescue kitty who was adopted from a shelter, and then given back because the owners couldn’t take care of him. He is about a year old, and we were told that he was an active little fellow. We have our doubts about this at the moment, since he has been hiding under the couch for the last two days, but we think that he is just nervous to be in a new home.

Watching him (or listening to him, since he is still a bit shy) play with the stairs is hilarious. He must not have had stairs in his old home, because he seems fascinated with running up and down them. (he has come out twice to play since we got him).

Our only issue is that the fiancé starts sneezing and getting blurry eyed when he touches his face after petting Ringo… but we are hoping that it all just works out!

More on Ringo soon!

Closet Transformation: Part 2

We are in the midst of changing the hallway closet into my personal walk in closet (you can see the first post here). The next step in the process was to add in the shelving. After doing some research, I decided that this Rubbermaid(R) system was the perfect one for my purposes (it also helped that it was on sale at the time). It has multiple shelves and hanging devices, which will make separating different clothing (shirts, pants, dresses, ect) easy.

The fiancé, being his awesome self, agreed to help me install the shelves. Good thing too, because he thought of important things like finding studs to screw the posts in on (rather than the if-it-looks-good-it-will-work approach that I would have taken).

Getting ready to install the closet!

The fiancé using his stud finder to figure out where we would hang the supporting units

The fiancé making sure that the stud finder was working (the first time he checked it hadn’t, but after that it did work well)

The first two supporting units needed to be installed so they were overlapping (since the closet wasn’t long enough to have them adjacent)

The fiancé made sure everything was level – I wouldn’t want my clothes to be on a tilt!

The vertical supports were added in next – one of the things I loved about this system is the sturdiness of it- there is no way that the shelving unit will collapse (unless the house comes down).

Making sure the vertical supports are straight!

Then it was time to decide where I wanted shelving and where I wanted to hang clothing. Luckily the fiancé was patient with me as I changed my mind about a million times.

All the shelves are up!

The fiancé was awesome and trimmed down a metal bar so that it would fit like I wanted it to (aren’t I lucky? :) )

Finishing up the installation! (notice the wine… something we both needed to get through this weekday home improvement session!)

Now I just need to put my clothes in the closet, add some better lighting, put down a rug, and figure out how to make the back of the closet (with the opening to the roof space) pretty (and I have a few ideas!).

A Book Review: The Sherlockian by Graham Moore

Since entering the “real world” and having a 9-5 job, I have found it increasingly hard to find the time to read books. The fiancé and I go to bed super early (we went to be at 8:45 twice this week – no joke) because we get up so early (him to go to work, and me to work out) and are so busy all day. I can honestly say though, I miss reading and getting lost in books. Every once in a while I find myself turning off for the weekend and just reading.

I saw the novel THE SHERLOCKIAN by Graham Moore when I was checking out at the Paper Store one day. What actually caught my attention was the display of the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY trilogy—the series that has taken the US by storm and is basically one walking porn series. I was surprised that books of such risqué content would be displayed so prominently in a family friendly store.

Anyway, right next to the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY display there was THE SHERLOCKIAN display and it immediately caught my attention. I went through a big Sherlock Holmes kick when I was in college, and read all of the stories I could get my hands on. I downloaded the book on my Kindle that night, a bit skeptical after reading the description online, and started to read. This is the first book in a long time that I found time to read during the week… it was so good!

Although I don’t want to give much away, here is a brief description of the book:

The book takes place in two times—at the turn of the twentieth century and in 2010. The historical part of the book focuses on Arthur Canon Doyle (he was the author of the Sherlock Holmes series) and an adventure he embarks on after he kills of Sherlock Holmes (he brought him back later). The present day part of the book follows one (rather bumbling, lovable) man, named Harold, as he tries to follow clues in order to find the missing volume of Arthur Canon Doyle’s diary.

Some of the book is based in fact—Arthur Canon Doyle kept detailed records of his life, and upon his death only one time period was not recorded in the diaries. It was during the “great hiatus” of Sherlock Holmes, when Doyle killed of Holmes. In his diaries it is seen that he abhorred the character Holmes, because he felt as though he was being over shadowed by his own character. Then, out of nowhere, he decided to resurrect Holmes and continue writing about him. But Holmes came back different, and many believe the missing diary would explain why Doyle started to write Sherlock Holmes stories again—and why Holmes was different.

The rest of the book is fiction—Moore decided to write the history as he thought it might have happened. Harold was also a figment of Moore’s imagination, although was based off a few actual Sherlockians of this time.

This book is a great read. Graham did a great job weaving a very Sherlockian type of mystery and keeps his readers entrapped throughout the entire book. Now excuse me while I go read Dracula—those of you who read THE SHERLOCKIAN will know why I need to!

Wedding Countdown: 100 days!!

I am so excited. In 100 short days I will officially be married to my best friend!! It is such a short period of time, but at the moment it also feels like it is light years away.

The fiancé and I :)

I am a little happy that there are still 100 days – so many things have to get done between then and now. I scheduled our engagement photos to be taken in May, we need to send out invitations, finalize meal options, go over flowers, get flower girl dresses, and the list goes on and on. So while I am SUPER excited that the wedding is fast approaching, I am glad we still have a little time. Wedding plans are going to have to take on a much bigger role now!

One of the things that I am focused on is getting myself ready for the big day. Naturally, like any bride, I want to look and feel my best on what will be the biggest moment of my life thus far. I amped up my work outs this week, and can honestly tell you that my butt has been kicked.

One great thing that has come out of this is I have discovered this amazing recipe from Shape Magazine’s website for good-for-you French toast. An added bonus is how easy it is to make. It is yummy, nutritious, and fast – a winning combination in my book. The actual recipe has a little more to it than just the french toast, but I find that just making the french toast and adding in whatever fruit I happen to have that morning is perfect for me.

The combination of wheat toast and an egg make this the perfect breakfast following my morning workouts

By adding some cinnamon and nutmeg this healthy meal is also a delight for my taste buds!

Things that make me smile

I am temporarily still working out at my parents house, and it is always a nice surprise when my Dad treats me to my favorite fruit – grapefruit!

I am in love with these amazing french bowls from Willams Sonoma that now grace my kitchen counter. Bonus? They match the dish ware that we registered for!

Something about Bud Light Lime always reminds me of summer.
